"You look up at the sky, do you see a lovely arrangement of clouds, or do you have a flash of the earth as a planet with an atmosphere, a little inconsequential planet floating in a dark vastness . . . ?! And if the latter, for how long can you hold that perception? In my experience few people can live close to death, but that's frequently where great art comes from. But those who always see not lovely clouds but earth with an atmosphere are usually heavily into drink or something, shopping, because the embrace of our actual condition is unbearable even for those strong enough to live close to the idea. . . "
